Gordon & MacPhail is an independent bottler and distiller of Scotch Whisky, founded in 1895. They have been bottling single malt whiskies for over 115 years, and now bottles over 350 different expressions from around 70 distilleries. It is a family business owned by the Urquhart Family

The Distillery:

Glenlivet was founded in 1824, and George Smith the founder was the first distiller to apply for an official license in the Speyside region.

Due to the quality of the whisky produced by Glenlivet some competitors started labeling their whiskies as Glenlivet.

The name still crops up elsewhere. However, by law, other brands must hyphenate it with their own names and cannot use it solely. (Glen Forres-Glenlivet, Dufftown-Glenlivet are a few examples).

Glenlivet is extremely successful in the American market and is since 1950’s the biggest selling single malt in US, and the world second best-selling single malt.

The distillery was bought by Seagram in 1978, and in 2001 sold to Pernod Ricard. Some of its malts are components on the blend of Chivas Regal, Royal Salute and 100 Pipers.

After taking over Glenlivet, Pernod Ricard invested £10 million adding an additional mash tun, eight washesback’s and 6 stills, increasing the distillery capacity by 75% with a total production of 10.5 million litres per year. In 2018 another extension to the distillery was built increasing the production capacity to 21 million liters of alcohol.
