We are in prime Rioja terroir here: near the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, at the northern limit of the region’s vineyards. This cooler zone is particularly favoured in warm vintages like 2015, with small berries and fresh acidity bringing the structure to offset the power of the fruit. Macán is a selection of the best lots coming from these superb vineyards – less than a third of the fruit makes it into the flagship wine. Though in theory any parcel could contribute to the blend, there tends to be a pattern, with higher-altitude, lower-yielding sites on limestone and yellow clay most likely to be chosen.
