Located in the north of the Pauillac appellation, separated from the St Estephe appellation by a small stream, Chateau Lafite Rothschild can be divided in 3 sections with 100 parcels in total.
The 112 hectare vineyard is planted to 70% Cab Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cab Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with increasing amount of Petit Verdot being added after the mid 90's.
On average the vines are close to 40 years old, but some vines in the La Graviere section can be traced to 100 years of age.
Vinification takes place in 66 vats that are a combination of 29 wooden vats, 20 stainless steel tanks and concrete vats that range in size from 45 hectoliters up to 270 hectoliters.
The wine age in 100% new French oak barrels from 18-20 months, depending on the vintage.
15.000 to 20.000 cases are produced every year of Lafite and Carruades de Lafite together.
1999 is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18.5% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot
