Bernard O'Phelan was an Irish wine broker that have left his country to settle in Bordeaux. From his marriage with one of the dauthers of Daniel Guestier a well known merchant in Bordeaux emerged the oportunity to produce his own wines.
In 1805 O'Phelan bought Clos de Garramey, and in 1810 Segur de Cabanac. By 1860 Bernard Phelan had created the largest vineyard in the entire Saint Estephe appellation.
The Chateau was built later by Frank Segur, the son of Bernard in the late 1860's and named Chateau Segur de Garramey.
With the death of Frank O'Phelan in 1883 the Chetau was sold, and had multiple owners including the Delon family in 1946 (owners of Leoville Las Cases), and Xavier Gardinier in 1985 the former head of Pommery Champagne.
In 2017 the Chateau was sold to Philippe Van de Vyvere a wealthy Belgian investor owner of one of the largest sea shipping company.
Phelan Segur is currently managed by Thierry Gardinier who's also responsible for the management of Chateau Meyney, and Grand Puy Ducasse.
The Chateau farms 70 hectares of vines in a gravel, sand and clay soils divided into 4 large blocks neighboring Chateau Montrose and Calon Segur. Vines age is in average 35 years old with some vines having over 70 years old.

In the cellar fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats that range in size from 40 hectoliters to 220 hectoliters.
The wine is aged for 18 months in 55% new French oak.
The 2019 vintage is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc.
