* Macallan vintage releases produced by Campbell, Hope & King tended to be aged around 15 years, but when Macallan took over the responsibility in 1980, they toyed for a few releases with more advanced age-statements of 17 and 18 years old.
* Prior to 1980, bottles of Scotch carried the old ‘proof’ calculation on the label: 100 proof, 80 proof or 70 proof (57.1% abv, 45.8% abv or 40% abv respectively).

Archibald Campbell, Hope and King Ltd was one of Edinburgh’s high-profile brewers through the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. The company also acted as a wine and spirit merchant, and carried out whisky blending and bottling operations from premises in New Elgin.
Until Macallan began to bottle its own whisky in 1962, Campbell, Hope and King Ltd offered a 10-year-old expression and various vintages from the late 1940s and 1950s, principally for export markets.
Located on the banks of the Spey River, The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824, and until 1980s was primarily a component in blended Scotch whiskies.
The Estate has 37 hectares of Barley farm which are used in the production of whisky. In 2018 the new distillery was concluded and it now counts with a modern facility with 12 washes still and 24 spirit stills.
The Macallan house style traditionally tended towards rich, fruity whiskies. This was a result of exclusively using Sherry casks to mature the spirit, but since 2004, Bourbon casks have also been used.
The Macallan nowadays belong to the Edrington Group, which also owns Glenrothes, Famous Grouse, Highland Park among others.
