Vega Sicilia, in Ribera del Duero, is Spain’s most famous winery, producing wines that are on a par with a Bordeaux first-growth. It was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves. Vega Sicilia has passed through several hands and its current chief executive and owner, Pablo Alvarez, whose family acquired the winery in 1982. By the early 20th century, Vega Sicilia was carving out an international reputation as a top quality winemaker. Vega Sicilia has a wide range of premium products. It also owns the Hungarian Tokay estate Oremus.
