Tasting Note

Burghound 94, Allen Meadows

An even spicier and more intricately layered nose reflects notes of plum, violet and lilac along with a hint of dark chocolate. The sleek and succulent medium weight flavors possess slightly better mid-palate density while flexing a taut muscularity on the moderately powerful and more mineral-driven finale that exhibits excellent length. This superb effort is bigger than it usually is and though it could use better depth, more will almost certainly develop if given a chance. In a word, terrific.

The Wine

“Les Fuées” is said to be a traditional Burgundian word referring to “the area of vines that a man can plough in a day with a hoe”. (Marie-Hélène Landrieu-Lussigny: Le vignoble bourguignon ; ses lieux-dits. Jeanne Laffitte éditeur)

This terroir has a very strong personality among the Premier Crus of Chambolle-Musigny. Less floral than the other sectors of the village, it offers a more mineral, earthy nuance than Chambolle village or Les Amoureuses, with a base of black fruits.

Full-bodied and deep on the palate, with a very straightforward attack.

Winemaking

Les Fuées” is a parcel of 71 ares located on the edge of the Bonnes Mares appellation zone, on the hillside just north of the village of Chambolle. This vineyard was planted in 1960. It produces few, but magnificent grapes with small berries spaced out, very colourful with a thick skin.

Annual production varies between around 1,500 and 3,500 bottles.

Vine Age: Planted in 1960
Terroir: North of village, upper slope, borders the southern side of Bonnes Marres
Viticulture: Sustainable
Vinification: 100% de-stemmed, 15-20 day ambient yeast fermentation in open wooden vats. Aged for 18 months in barrel (15% new oak). Racked twice. Transferred in April to stainless steel tanks to age for 3 additional months. Bottled in June-July. SO2 additions before fermentation and before bottling.

Winery

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, based in Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy, is renowned for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines, particularly its acclaimed Musigny Grand Cru. Founded in the 1880s by Frédéric Mugnier as a producer of aperitifs and liqueurs, the estate is now led by his great-great-grandson of the same name, focusing exclusively on fine winemaking. In addition to its flagship Musigny Grand Cru, the domaine crafts distinguished wines from Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, as well as premier crus from Les Fuées and Les Amoureuses vineyards, along with a village-level wine. Respecting Burgundy’s storied terroir, the winery employs traditional methods to express the purity and elegance of its exceptional vineyards.
