The distillery

Known for its powerful peaty aromas Laphroaig distillery history begins in 1825 with Donald and Alexander Johnston leasing 250 hectares of land to raise cattle and plant barley for feed.

Donald and Alexander gained a reputation for whisky made on their excess crop of Barley, using a local water source low in minerals but soft and peaty.

During the 19th century curiously, their neighbor distiller Lagavulin were buying about 50% of the Laphroaigs production to use on their blended whisky.

The business remained in the Johnston family until 1960s when it was sold to Long John International, and more recently in 2011 bought by Bean that became Bean Suntory in 2014.

To this day Laphroaig is one of the few distilleries with its own malting floor, although the homemade malt only supplies 10% of its needs for a year production.
